WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FINE, MEDIUM, AND COARSE GRAINED CORK?

If you need a smooth and flexible material that’s easy to cut, fine-grained cork is a great option. It’s ideal for creating promotional items, technical seals, coasters, and shoe insoles. Plus, it’s perfect for various decorative projects.

Medium-grain cork boards are great if you’re looking for a pinning surface. These boards have a bit more texture, making them perfect for pinning notes or photos.

Coarse-grained cork is excellent for insulation. Due to its higher density, coarse cork is commonly used in industrial settings, such as machine insulation. However, if you're seeking top-notch performance, consider expanded cork for superior insulation.

SELF-ADHESIVE CORK SHEETS OR STANDARD CORK BOARDS – WHICH ONE SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Self-adhesive cork is like a stickerjust peel off the backing and stick it to a clean surface. Keep in mind, though, that it works best on smooth, clean, and dust-free surfaces like drywall or furniture panels.

Standard cork boards without adhesive require a bit more work to install, but they give you more flexibility. You can easily cut and shape them to fit your needs. If you’re into DIY projects and want to create your own corkboard from scratch, these are perfect for you.

HOW TO INSTALL CORK BOARD SHEETS WITH ADHESIVE?

You will need the following items:

  • Adhesive for natural cork (for example, Wakol D-3540),
  • A velour roller with a short nap,
  • A rubber mallet,
  • A damp cloth for cleaning up excess adhesive.

Important: Allow the cork sheets to acclimate to the room where they will be installed for 72 hours. This helps the cork adjust to the temperature and humidity.

  1. Prepare the surface: Ensure the wall is clean, smooth, and dry. Remove any dust or grease to ensure a proper bond with the adhesive.
  2. Apply the adhesive: Use the velour roller to apply adhesive evenly on both the wall and the back of the cork sheets. Wait about 30 minutes for the adhesive to turn clear.
  3. Install the cork: Press the cork sheets firmly onto the wall, making sure they are aligned. Use the rubber mallet to gently secure them in place.
  4. Remove excess adhesive: If any adhesive seeps out, wipe it off immediately with a damp cloth to avoid stains.
  5. Let it dry: Allow the adhesive to fully cure for around 24 hours before using the cork surface.

HOW TO APPLY SELF-ADHESIVE CORK SHEETS TO A WALL?

Applying self-adhesive cork sheets is easy:

  1. Allow the cork to acclimate: Leave the cork sheets in the room where they will be installed for 72 hours before application. This ensures the material adjusts to the temperature and humidity.
  2. Prepare the wall: Make sure the surface is smooth, dry, and free from dust or debris. Self-adhesive cork works best on well-prepared surfaces like drywall or furniture panels.
  3. Install the cork: Peel the backing off the cork sheets and press them firmly onto the wall. Ensure even pressure for proper adhesion.

This makes cork one of the most eco-friendly materials around. By choosing cork, you’re contributing to environmental conservation – annual cork production absorbs an impressive 14 million tons of CO2. Eco-friendly, beautiful, and practical!
